Nature & outdoor adventures in Hemavan & Tärnaby, Swedish Lapland

Hello! I’m Fanny, your outdoor guide based in Hemavan & Tärnaby, the heart of Sweden’s breathtaking landscapes!

My project, Paws & Compass, is the fulfilment of a long-held dream, shaped by years of experience, meaningful encounters, and a deep longing for freedom and adventure.

Exploring nature with my dogs has been my passion since childhood, and I’ve been working in the winter outdoor world for over ten years, from skijoring and cross-country skiing to snowshoeing. This unique connection with my dogs and the natural world is more than a hobby: it’s my way of life.

My background as a firefighter and healthcare assistant has given me solid experience in group management, risk awareness, and first aid, essential skills for guiding safely in demanding environments.

My move to Sweden was no coincidence. For me, this country embodies freedom: the freedom to explore vast open spaces, and the freedom granted by the right of public access to nature (Allemansrätten), which allows everyone to enjoy the land, as long as it is respected.

To formalise my expertise and provide the highest standard of guidance, I became a certified Nature and Adventure Guide and continue to develop my skills through further training.

Through Paws & Compass, I want to share this way of life with others: to help people slow down, discover the outdoors in a meaningful way, and perhaps begin to believe in what they are capable of.

What Paws & Compass means

Paws

Activities with dogs, skijoring, dog-hiking. Whether discovering this sport for the first time or looking to improve, I guide you on introductory outings or full-day adventures. Experience the unique strength and partnership of our furry friends while exploring stunning winter landscapes.

Compass

Adventure with or without a dog, Nordic backcountry ski tours, snowshoeing, or self-sufficient immersions in the vast Swedish wilderness. Off-grid cabin stays without running water or electricity, offering a chance to slow down, disconnect, and reconnect with nature.

Small groups

I favour small groups to ensure an intimate experience and minimise our environmental impact. You are never just a number in a crowd.

Nature first

Respect for the environment and animal welfare are central to everything I do. Every activity is carefully designed to reduce our footprint and deepen your immersion.

Beyond your limits

My driving force is to show people they can go beyond what they believe are their limits and awaken their sense of wonder at nature’s beauty.

Meet the real stars of the show

They’re not just pets but working partners, trail guides, and the soul of every Paws & Compass adventure.

I was 9 years old when I got my first dog Rox, a mix of Papillon and terrier. With him, I walked and ran countless kilometres through the mountains and countryside of my childhood. We took part in agility competitions and I’m not going to lie, we didn’t place among the top but to me, we were the best. No one helped me train or educate him, it was just me, and he remained my precious friend until he was 19.

My sweet Patty came into my life during my teenage years. She led me to take part in sheep herding courses, and that’s when I began to picture a life that truly suited me: mountains, dogs… though I didn’t yet know how to bring it all together.

It was Mohawk, my first husky, my beloved one, who pushed me into the world of sled dogs. I compete my first canicross with her!

Little by little, I found my way.

Mabel

Siberian Husky· born in 2026 · The Pocket Rocket

She already has a strong personality and a remarkable maturity for her age. She happily joins us on our adventures, taking everything in with an impressive curiosity and intelligence.

Playful, affectionate, and incredibly cuddly, she loves being close to us. Her confident little character helps her find her place among the others, and there is no doubt she will be an excellent leader.

Named after J.R.R. Tolkien’s mother, Mabel’s name comes from the Latin amabilis, meaning “lovable”.

Lumi

Siberian Husky· born in 2025 · The Handsome One

He is irresistibly cute, gentle, and full of love. Off-lead, he enjoys exploring; in harness, he switches to work mode, pulling hard and running fast. Brave and intelligent, he is a natural leader.

His little secret: he sleeps on the doorstep of our bedroom and, during the night, curls up against me.

Lumi means ”snow” in finnish.

Bamse

Greenland Dog · born in 2021 · The World's Kindest Dog

We welcomed this big teddy bear into our lives at four years old, and from the very first evening, I knew he was home.

Clingy, clumsy, playful, and peaceful, he has a wonderfully funny and endearing personality. His social intelligence brings balance to our little team.

He may not enjoy running fast, but he truly comes alive exploring wide, open spaces.

Bamse is the name of a famous swedish teddy bear.

Nilakka

Greenland Dog · born in 2015 · The Queen

This fluffy puppy came into my life at four months old, and everything changed. With her, I discovered the outdoor life, sled dogs, and winter mountains, even taking part in the Beaver Trap Trail on skis with my loyal purple pulka.

A true hurricane, she is strong, intelligent, and incredibly close to me. She still loves to run and needs to keep moving.

She may have raised my cortisol levels more than once, but she has also been a light that helped heal my soul.

Nilakka is named after a Finnish lake.
